While most of WSSP's requirements align with building codes, some criteria aren't mandatory in residential construction, often used as a comparison to school buildings. When we compare the wear and tear on an average household versus a school, it becomes clear that school finishes must be more durable due to higher density. For example, a 3,200 sq ft home housing a family of four has a density of 800 sq ft per person, whereas a 75,000 sq ft school accommodating 600 students has only 125 sq ft per person. This significant difference highlights the necessity for sturdy, long-lasting materials in school construction.

WSSP also helps districts consider the initial cost of construction against the total cost of ownership. Best practices result in water and energy savings, achieved by using energy-efficient equipment and designing features like low-flush toilets and low-maintenance landscaping.

Polished concrete, for instance, might be more expensive upfront than carpet or vinyl composition tile, but it requires far less maintenance over time. No need for costly floor stripping, waxing, and polishing or summer carpet cleanings.
